After this engagement phase, Ariela shared two
different videos that contained a medley, or a “mashup” of music over the last
120 years in America to display the wide variety of music that has been popular
throughout the decades and to demonstrate how music has evolved in a short
period of time. After viewing the video, Ariela gave a presentation about the
history of music in America, highlighting different important music genres such
as jazz, blues, soul, etc. She not only provided examples of what the music
sounded like, but also described the historical importance of the music in
America. Because American is such a multicultural nation, music is inextricably
linked to race and political shifts in America. Each musical genre lead to a
new decade during which Ariela and the students discussed the importance of
musical history on popular music around the world today.

Following the presentation, Ariela asked the students to discuss with each other the importance of music, American history, and popular culture. She asked the question, “Do you think music has the power to change the world?” and “What is the purpose of music? How does music affect society today?” Students passionately shared their responses and the salon was such a success that it ran over the allotted two hour time period. Because students were so engaged, Ariela concluded the salon with a video of viral American music videos from 2018 to show the state of music today in America. Students slowly trickled out of the building but continued to passionately talk about music.

Report | Ariela:American Sports【English Salon(40)】

Writer: Ariela  Editor:Bingmei Yan   Photographer:Chen Xiong

American sports are a little different, but  as fun as you think!

On May 15, 2019 at 6:30pm an English salon was
hosted on the fifth floor of the library on the North Campus at Inner Mongolia
University. The salon was hosted by Rosa, a deputy research librarian of the
Inner Mongolia University Library. Ariela, an American and a foreign English
teacher in the School of Foreign Languages at the University, was the invited
guest. The topic of this English Salon was about American Sports and related
content.

Giving Self Introduction

To begin the session, Ariela introduced herself and invited the studentsto also introduce themselves by sharing their English/Chinese/Mongolian nameand answering the question, “What is your favorite sport?”. After introductions, the foreign teacher invited the participants to engage with an ice-breakercalled “Chain Story”. The students were asked to use their imagination tocontinue a story that began with “Once upon a time, there was a young girl wholived in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia…”. Each student in the group was encouraged tocontinue the story with a single sentence. As each student continued the story,it took on a life of its own and allowed for the students to get to know eachother and get into the groove of prating their oral English.

Ariela, Foreign Teacher of Foreign Language Department of Inner Mongolia University

Ice Breaking Challenge

Video Watching

After the ice-breaker, Ariela shared an
inspirational video about sports called, “How Great I Am”. After viewing the
video, Ariela encouraged the students to engage in discussion by asking what
sports they saw in the video. As the discussion progressed, the students called
out more and more sports they are familiar with and they filled an entire
whiteboard with their responses. Ariela also posed the questions, “Why do you
like sports?” and “Why do you think people around the world love sports?”

Idea Sharing Session

Teamwork

Following the engagement portion of the English
salon, the group was then divided into three groups to allow for the students
to participate in a collaborative discussion. Each group was asked to create a
list of their own “Top 10 Greatest Sports of All Time”. They were asked to
create a criteria for what makes a sport great and then to create their
own comprehensive list. Each sport on their list had to fit their criteria and
they had to be prepared to present their lists and give reasons for their
decisions. After much heated debate, each of the three groups chose a group
member to present their criteria and list to the rest of the salon.

The first group chose the criteria: functional to daily life activity. They argued that a great sport should somehow be relatable to daily life. For example, they chose running as a great sport due to the reason the that humans have been running for thousands of years in order to survive such as when early man had to run away from animals trying to eat him. The second group chose the criteria: national pride. They agreed that a sport is great if it defines people’s national identity. For example, they had the three manly Mongolian sports (archery, wrestling, and horseback riding) on their list because these sports are a huge part of Mongolian culture and identity. The final group had the criteria: joyfulness. They believed that a sport is great if it can bring joy to people. They chose soccer (football) as the greatest sport because of its popularity aroundthe world and the amount of joy it can bring to people.

The salon was concluded after each group
presented their “Top 10 Greatest Sports of All Time” lists. The foreign teacher
summed up the topic and previewed the theme for the following week: The History
of American Music.

Report | Ariela:“996”【English Salon(39)】

Writer: Ariela  Editor:Bingmei Yan   Photographer:Bingmei Yan

On April 24, 2019 at 6:30pm an English salon was hosted on the fifthfloor of the library on the North Campus at Inner Mongolia University. Thesalon was hosted by Rosa, a deputy research librarian of the Inner MongoliaUniversity Library. Ariela, an American and a foreign English teacher in theSchool of Foreign Languages at the University, was the invited guest. The topicof this English Salon was about the pros and cons of the 996 policy and relatedcontent.

To begin the session, Ariela introduced herself and invited the studentsto also introduce themselves by sharing their English/Chinese/Mongolian nameand answering the question, “What is your favorite book/ Who is your favoriteauthor?”. After introductions, the foreign teacher invited the participants toengage with an ice-breaker in which they must tell their life story in a singleminute. This is a fun exercise that allows for the students to get to know eachother, laugh, and feel more comfortable speaking English with each other.

Giving Self Introduction

After the ice-breaker, the foreign English
teacher introduced the theme of the discussion. She gave the students a short
article to read about Jack Ma’s role in helping to normalize the 996 practice
in China, as well as shared a short video that detailed some of the main points
and arguments about the 996 debate. Both the article and the video highlight
the main components of 996. It is a practice that essentially makes employees
work 9am to 9pm 6 days a week, especially in the country’s big technology companies
and startups. After viewing these two pieces of media, Ariela invited the
students to engage with the topic by asking them their own personal opinions
about the work-life balance, as well as detailing how the rest of the world
views this kind of work schedule such as America or European countries.

Discussion

Many students could see the benefits but also
the cons of working a 996 schedule. In small groups the students were asked to
discuss the following questions: Does working longer hours lead to more productivity?
If you love your job is 996 a problem? Who benefits the most from 996? Who
benefits the least? What is the ideal work/life balance? How many hours would
YOU want to work in a day?

Ariela Preparing PPT for the English Salon

After this small group discussion, the salon was divided into two opposinggroups. One side of the group represented Jack Ma and his company and the otherside represented his employees. The two groups were asked to prepare theirarguments for their respective sides. Ariela acted as the mediator. The twogroups met separately to discuss their arguments for their respective pointsand to anticipate any rebuttals that the opposing side might present. Eachgroup then elected a group member to present their opening statements andproceed with the debate. Each side was only given up to 1 minute to speak. Theywere given a 10 second warning before Ariela, the mediator, cut them off. Eachside passionately argued for their opinions, and at the end of the debate itwas hard to choose a winner. All students participated so well! The debate wasa great success. The salon was concluded after the debate.

Welcome to the English Salon

On April 17, 2019 at 6:30pm an English salon was hosted on the fifthfloor of the library on the North Campus at Inner Mongolia University. Thesalon was hosted by Rosa, a deputy research librarian of the Inner MongoliaUniversity Library. Ariela, an American and a foreign English teacher in theSchool of Foreign Languages at the University, was the invited guest. The topicof this English Salon was about the pros and cons of living in a technologicalage and related content.

1

Giving Self Introduction

To begin the session, Ariela introduced herself
and invited the students to also introduce themselves by sharing their
English/Chinese/Mongolian name a   nd answering the question, “Who is your
favorite singer?”. After introductions, the foreign teacher invited the
participants to engage with an ice-breaker called “Two Truths and One Life”.
The students were divided into three groups and each student had to share three
facts about themselves. However, the twist of this icebreaker is that one of
the “facts” is actually a lie. The other students in the group must guess which
fact is actually a lie. This exercise allows the students to get to know each
other as they laugh and joke with each other. It is a great way to allow
students to relax and feel comfortable speaking to each other in English.

Ice Breaking Challenge

2

Discussion

After the ice-breaker, the foreign English
teacher introduced the theme of the discussion. She invited the students to
engage with the topic by posing the following questions: What do you use your
phone for every day? How many times did you use your phone today? Can you life
for one day without your phones? These questions guided the students to explore
the ways in which they personally use technology and how they are dependent on
technology in so many aspects of their lives. They noted that technology can
greatly enhance their life in a number of ways such as: phones as payment
methods, GPS navigation, online shopping, convenient travel, social media,
communicating with family and friends, etc. However, they also noted a number
of drawbacks with social media such as: inspiring laziness in people, fraud,
lowering people’s self esteem, etc.

3

Pros and Cons of Cellphone

Following this, Ariela showed an animated video
that showed some of the negative aspects of technology in today’s world. She
invited the students interact with the video by saying, “Some people think too
much technology is bad for society. Others disagree. What do YOU think?” The
students were invited to make a list of pros and cons of living in a digital
age.

4

Idea Sharing

5

Debate

The students were then divided into two groups
in order to form a proper debate. One group had to argue the pros of living in
a digital world. The other group had to argue the cons of living in a digital
age. Ariela acted as the mediator. The two groups met separately to discuss
their arguments for their respective points and to anticipate any rebuttals
that the opposing side might present. Each group then elected a group member to
present their opening statements and proceed with the debate. Each side was
only given up to 1 minute to speak. They were given a 10 second warning before
Ariela, the mediator, cut them off. Because of the time limit, and the passion
that the students had in arguing their sides of the discussion, the debate was
very heated and intense. All students spoke at least one time during the debate
and some were so passionate they could barely wait their turn to speak.
Overall, the debate was a great success and Ariela could not pick a single side
as a winner. Both sides wont the argument!

The salon was concluded after the debate. The
foreign teacher summed up the topic and previewed the theme for the following
week: The 996 policy in China.
